The six trails lacing the educational area all provide easy walking. The gravel Cabin Trail connects the parking area to the Grass River Center buildig. Boardwalks covering the Sedge Meadow, Tamarack and Fern Trails provide accessibility to wetland flora and fauna and are wheelchair friendly. The Woodland/Wildfire and Glacial Plain Trails are footpaths.
During the summer, a naturalist is at the site Tuesday through Sunday from mid-June through Labor Day. Guided walks can be arranged. While at the site, be sure to visit the Grass River Center and see the displays. A selection of nature books is available for sale at the building with proceeds furthering the educational program.
The Grass River Natural Area entrance is off Alden Highway (Co. Road 618), 4 miles northeast of Alden, 4 miles south of Bellaire and 8 miles west of Mancelona. The preserve is also accessible by boat from the Grass River dock located between Clam Lake and Lake Bellaire.
